On Feb. 7, both varsity Savannah Savage Basketball teams, boys and girls, played the Bishop LeBlond Eagles for Winter Homecoming. This was Savannah’s Annual Courtwarming and proved to be another success with the two games and the coronation.
The Lady Savages defeated the Eagles in a close match, 49-44, to move them to an 8-10 record on this season. With key performances from junior Rylee Benight and sophomore Lexi Jones the ladies had a great overall courtwarming and are planning on keeping the energy up and winning spirits high.
“Our mentality for the rest of the season would probably be to finish the season strong and get as far as possible,” Benight said.
The boys team also defeated the Eagles in a 49-35 showdown. Coming into the game the boys were 8-10 on the season and were looking to gain momentum going into the next two weeks and Districts, along with the Lady Savages. With senior Blayne Nelson’s scoring and junior Wes Darnell’s work on the boards, they led the Savages to their new overall record of 9-10.
“It felt really good to get a win on homecoming night, especially since there were a lot of people there and a good student section. That makes a big difference for teams and how they play,” junior guard Quay Jeter said.
Prior to the two games, Savannah had the coronation of the 2020 Winter Homecoming King and Queen, as well as the presentation of the freshman, sophomore and junior attendants. Attendants were Mila Brandt, freshmen; Emma Tipton, sophomore; and Jocelyn Cunningham, junior. Candidates for the King were seniors Jadon Brady, Nelson and Zach Wright while the Queen candidates were Jocelynn Kallauner, Rylie Sportsman and Kirby Walsh. After getting introduced to the crowd, the winners were announced to the public. Brady and Kallauner were given the honor of being named the 2020 King and Queen. The two seniors were crowned and then paraded around the gym for a very memorable courtwarming.
“I was honored to be nominated for homecoming queen. I would’ve never thought in a million years that I would’ve won. But thanks to everyone who voted for me, I became the homecoming queen,” Kallauner said.
