The Savannah High School DECA chapter competed in their District 1 competition last Friday, Feb. 7. The students have been preparing for this competition since school started in August, under the supervision of Savannah DECA advisor, Mrs. Erica Fischer. There were 32 students that competed. The competition was held at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

The competition is a choice of two events. A role play, where teams get a situation associated with whatever category they are competing in and have 10 minutes to come up with a plan to solve the problem. Once they’ve come up with a plan to solve the problem, they then have 10 minutes to present how you can help improve this business and resolve the problem.

The other event is a research paper competition. The research competition revolves around finding ways to improve a company's online presence. Teams research a company associated with the event they are competing in. Different events vary on the length of the paper, but it is between a 10 and 20 page paper. In this paper, teams need to provide charts and statistics as they illustrate ways to improve the company. Once they have finished the paper they are required to create a presentation of some sort to present to the judge for the company.

Those who competed in Districts and moved on will compete in the State Competition on March 22-24 in Kansas City at Crown Center. The students will be able to meet with other students from all over Missouri, playing different games and listening to different speakers present their business insight. The students will also compete on one of the days, and have an awards ceremony the following day.

The following students who moved on to the State Competition are: seniors Alex Bowie, Logan Caples, Rylee Caples, Izzy CDeBaca, Bre Chappell, Leah Craig, Nathan Crippen, Drew Duane, Noah Duncan, Rylee Scott and Kirby Walsh; juniors Wesley Darnell, Quay Jeter, Caden Proctor, Ben Schneider, Megan Schussler; sophomores James Bauer and Maddee Olszowka; and freshman Danica Rodriguez.

Good luck to all those competing at State, and congratulations on your success thus far.
