This week spirits are soaring in anticipation of Savannah High’s Winter Homecoming.The halls are decorated with space themed pictures and colorful streamers to represent the theme, “To Infinity and Beyond.” Students are preparing for the dance, a time for students to hang out and get to know their peers.
This homecoming dance is different from the previous years; this year student council is hosting a semi-formal, meaning students will be dressed in semi-formal attire instead of casual clothes. This is due to popular demand; for years students have wanted to attend a homecoming dance dressed up, and now is their chance.
While the dance will be the end to a great homecoming week, that is not all the students are looking forward to this week.
“I'm really excited to watch powder buff and basketball. I'm really nervous to walk out in front of people,” freshman attendant Mila Brandt said.
Homecoming is a tradition that Savannah holds every year, twice a year. The Savages come together and get to dress up in funny outfits for Spirit Days to show our Savage Pride. This year’s days included “Space Jammie Day” on Monday; “Light Years Day” on Tuesday, where students in different grade levels and staff represented different generations; “Shining Stars Day” on Wednesday, where students and staff wore neon; “Cowboys and Aliens Day” on Thursday; and “Black (and Gold) Out Day” on Friday.
On Wednesday STUCO hosted the traditional assembly and parade in the high school gym. This is a chance for students to see who the attendants and king and queen candidates are, and to celebrate the different teams and organizations.
This year's homecoming attendants are freshman Brandt, sophomore Emma Tipton and junior Jocelyn Cummingham. King and Queen candidates are Jadon Brady, Jocelynn Kallauner, Blayne Nelson, Riley Sportsman, Kirby Walsh and Zach Wright. Students voted for the king and queen on Wednesday during lunch.
“I'm excited to get dressed up, but a little nervous to walk out in front of everyone,” Sportsman said.
Coronation will take place Friday night preceding the girls basketball game at 5:30 p.m. The girls will play at 6, followed by the Hall of Fame induction ceremony, and then concluding with the boys game. Homecoming is a time to celebrate school traditions with fellow students and community members.
